IVC Filter Placement & Removal Expertise
IVC filters are specialized devices designed to prevent life-threatening blood clots from reaching the lungs. In the setting of a deep venous thrombosis (DVT) an IVC filter placement can be lifesaving. Once the threat of clot migration to the lungs has subsided, it is just as important to have your IVC filter removed to prevent further complications.

Understanding IVC Filter Procedures
What is an IVC Filter?
IVC filters are small umbrella shaped metallic devices designed to halt blood clots from traveling to the lungs. Positioned within the inferior vena cava, the filter acts as a barrier, capturing clots and preventing them from reaching vital organs. As blood flows, the filter effectively traps these clots, reducing the risk of potentially deadly pulmonary complications.
Who Needs an IVC Filter?
Patients at risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism (PE) are prime candidates for IVC filter placement. Every case is assessed individually to determine when and if an IVC filter placement or removal is warranted. Common situations where IVC filter placement may be recommended includes patients unable to tolerate anticoagulation therapy, or patients on anticoagulation therapy that still have issues with DVT.
IVC Filter Placement & Removal
The placement of an IVC filter involves a minimally invasive procedure performed in office under sedation. The procedure is performed through a small pinhole in the neck or groin. A catheter is positioned in the inferior vena cava, where the IVC filter is deployed under image guidance and the catheter subsequently removed. IVC removal is performed in a similar fashion to how it was placed. Retrievable IVC filters can be removed once the clot risk subsides, typically remaining in place for three to 12 months.

IVC Filter Placement: Advantages & Outcomes
Preventing Pulmonary Embolism
IVC filters play a crucial role in reducing the risk of pulmonary embolism. By effectively trapping large blood clots, they prevent these clots from reaching the heart and lungs. This is especially beneficial for patients who can't undergo anticoagulation therapy or have recurrent deep venous thrombosis despite adequate anticoagulation therapy.
Minimally Invasive Approach
The procedure for IVC filter placement is minimally invasive, performed on an outpatient basis with minimal discomfort and no downtime.
IVC Filter Removal
Despite the benefits of IVC filter placement, it is just as important to have your IVC filter removed when it is no longer needed. Chronically indwelling IVC filters can result in additional complications making timely removal essential.
